Wyatt Earp:Dodge City #1

www.Moonstonebooks.com Posted by Hello

YEE-HAW,,,the western comic is not dead. I remember as a kid sitting and reading my stack of comics and spending the most time on the westerns, and then spending the rest of the day thinking about shooting bad guys with my six-shooters and riding off into the sunset. As the years went by the western stories fell to the way-side to make room for the ever growing super-hero population. There have been several stabs at westerns over the last few years with Marvel's Blaze of Glory and DC's Jonah Hex, but none have been able to bring back the true feeling of those books of old. But now the genre is back with a vengence in the form of Wyatt Earp Dodge City from Moonstone Books. Moonstone has brought back the true western in all its gritty, gun-slinging glory. Issue #1 was released last month and is written by Chuck Dixon (Birds Of Prey) and art by Enrique Villagran, with a sharp cover by Steve Lieber. The art is done in gorgeous black & white, now I know that there are people out there who dislike the B&W format, but it works wonderfully in this book. Villagren's heavy line art style gives you the true feeling of the western town surroundings and gives the trail bitten faces of the characters true feeling. Dixon weaves a great tale around the main character and introduces characters common to the Wyatt Earp mythos. A darker tale then we are used to seeing from Chuck Dixon, he adds a touch of comedy, followed by a splash of tradagy and all the gunplay and bar-room exchanges you would expect out of any good western story. Issue #1 sets the stage for Wyatt's arrival into Dodge City in 1877 and his first days as Sheriff. I don't really want to give away too much story because this is a story that needs to be taken in new. The issue does end leaving you wanting more, which alot of books these days do not accomplish. I have to admit that I have not enjoyed reading a comic this much in a long time, the kind of story that just draws you along panel to panel, and I cannot wait till issue #2 is released. Moonstone also offers 3 other western themed titles with Geronimo, The Cisco Kid and Belle Star.

New Release Tuesday !

Its tuesday, so that means its new DVD and Game release day for most major retailers. Some notable DVDs for today include :

After The Sunset: Directed by Brett Ratner(Rush Hour) and starring Pierce Brosnan,Woody Harrelson,Don Cheadle and Selma Hayek(who alone is worth the purchase price price). A good comedy wrapped around the premise of a jewel heist.

Astro Boy:The Complete Series.: So no one gets confused, this is a collection of the 2003 series, not the originals. This 5 disc set contains 50 episodes, 29 of which have never aired in the United States.

Crimson Rivers 2:Angels Of The Apocalypse : This would be my top pick of the week. If you were lucky enough to locate a copy of the original Crimson Rivers you will be pleasantly surprised with this sequel. Written by Luc Besson and starring Jean Reno, this time centers around a serial killer murdering people in ways that mirror the deaths of the original 12 Apostles. This horror/mystery/police drama is on a Special Edition DVD with some very limited extras. Look for a complete review in the near future.

Closer : A beatifully tragic story of love, betrayel, love again and then more betrayel. Starring Jude Law,Natalie Portman,Julia Roberts and Clive Owen.

Also on the game front, the most notable release this week would be for XBOX.

WWE Wrestlemania 21 : This game will hopefully break the streak of bad wrestling games on the XBOX. Featuring a new engine from THQ,voice-overs and XBOX-live support.

Frank Miller's Sin City : 4 days and counting.

On Friday April 1st one of the most anticipated comic to film adaptations will hit theaters in the form of Frank Miller's Sin City. Based of stories and characters created by Frank Miller, this film will cover 3 of his main stories, Sin City, That Yellow Bastard and The Big Fat Kill. Ever since I first heard about this movie being in production I had my doubts. I am a very big fan of Miller's work and didn't want it Hollywoodized. But after seeing the short preview show at the San Diego ComicCon all those fears were put to rest. This film looks amazing. Using the new "digital backlot" technique, Rodriguez and Miller where able to recreate the Sin City world layer by layer. Any fan of the book will be amazed by the fact that you can take any image from the printed stories and find its match in live action on the screen. It is even said that Rodriguez withdrew from the Directors Guild to allow Miller to be listed as a co-director. A whos-who of Hollywood actors populated the digital world of Sin City including Mickey Rourke as Marv, Clive Owen as Dwight, Bruce Willis as Hartigan and Jessica Alba as Nancy. Also look for appearances by Jamie King, Rosario Dawson, Elijah Woods, Brittany Murphy, Benicio Del Toro, Nick Stahl and many more. I will be in line to see this movie on the first day and I know I will not be disappointed. I will post a review as soon as I can after seeing the movie.

Now Playing Magazine #1

Pick it up now !! Posted by Hello

Today I was asked , "How can you review a magazine about reviews?". So this is more of a recommendation than a review. Now Playing (issue #1 on stands now) is a new publication right now slated for a 4 times a year print run. This magazine can be described in one word, "WOW". It covers about every aspect of media and pop culture out today. This issue alone covers so many different topics that it will keep you reading cover to cover. Here is a breakdown of some of the top stories covered in this issue.

The Sincerest Form of Flattery: A look at the proliferation of fan-made films based on licensed characters.

This Game Is Far From Over: Covering the idea of video game based movies and thier effect on pop culture and the future of movie-making.

Asian Invasion: The influx of Asain culture into the American mainstream. From the remakes of Japanese horror like The Ring and The Grudge, to music and art.

Silver Screen Superstars: Hollywood blockbusters made from comic book properties.

Plus loads of other small stories and sidebars. The reviews section of the book is worth the purchase price alone. Covering DVD's, music, video games and comics.

I cannot say enough good things about this magazine. I look forward to the 2nd issue and hope they decide to publish more than 4 times a year.

Now Playing Magazine #1 Spring 2005 110 pages $3.99 cover price ($4.99 1 year subscription)

One BLOG to rule them all !!

heh,,sorry. That was fun to say. Welcome to my new Blog. I just wanted to use this space to post reviews on various topics and media. Over the next couple days I will start posting reviews. Now this will not only be new releases, but older movies, books and games of interest. I am a avid reader and video-phile with a very large and topic spanning collection. Recently I have also becaome addicted to XBOX gaming online, so expect to see some good games reviewed and discussed. Please feel free to comment on any review, and if there is something you would like me to cover just let me know. Lets keep our fingers crossed.
