Wyatt Earp:Dodge City #1

YEE-HAW,,,the western comic is not dead. I remember as a kid sitting and reading my stack of comics and spending the most time on the westerns, and then spending the rest of the day thinking about shooting bad guys with my six-shooters and riding off into the sunset. As the years went by the western stories fell to the way-side to make room for the ever growing super-hero population. There have been several stabs at westerns over the last few years with Marvel's Blaze of Glory and DC's Jonah Hex, but none have been able to bring back the true feeling of those books of old. But now the genre is back with a vengence in the form of Wyatt Earp Dodge City from Moonstone Books. Moonstone has brought back the true western in all its gritty, gun-slinging glory. Issue #1 was released last month and is written by Chuck Dixon (Birds Of Prey) and art by Enrique Villagran, with a sharp cover by Steve Lieber. The art is done in gorgeous black & white, now I know that there are people out there who dislike the B&W format, but it works wonderfully in this book. Villagren's heavy line art style gives you the true feeling of the western town surroundings and gives the trail bitten faces of the characters true feeling. Dixon weaves a great tale around the main character and introduces characters common to the Wyatt Earp mythos. A darker tale then we are used to seeing from Chuck Dixon, he adds a touch of comedy, followed by a splash of tradagy and all the gunplay and bar-room exchanges you would expect out of any good western story. Issue #1 sets the stage for Wyatt's arrival into Dodge City in 1877 and his first days as Sheriff. I don't really want to give away too much story because this is a story that needs to be taken in new. The issue does end leaving you wanting more, which alot of books these days do not accomplish. I have to admit that I have not enjoyed reading a comic this much in a long time, the kind of story that just draws you along panel to panel, and I cannot wait till issue #2 is released. Moonstone also offers 3 other western themed titles with Geronimo, The Cisco Kid and Belle Star.
